Indoor Soccer Update

Quick recap of our last two games; in short, not so hot.

We don’t seem to be gelling as a team like we did last season, everyone seems to want to play from the back, I broke my collarbone, so we a minus an experienced keeper too.  I just wanted to boost myself there.

Last week we went down 5-2 in a rather crazy kind of game.  I didn’t pay my game fees for this half of the season, believing I would not be ready to play.  Due to some player shortages and general unfitness, I’ve scraped a few minutes in.   In James’ words, ‘I didn’t help [my] cause’, when I scored a screamer with the outside of my left foot.

That was really all there was to that game, the rest was just fouls, fouls and more fouls.  Apparently, according to our referee, indoor soccer is ‘non-contact’, and despite many attempts to find our just what that meant for the game, we were told to read the rule-book.  OK, fair enough, we can do that after the game, but what about during?  I think it’s the referee’s resposibility to explain to the players, on both sides, his interpretation of the rules.

Both sides were committing fouls, left right and centre, most were in my opinion quite trivial; tackling the ball from front on, but hitting the players leg in the process.  I can understand, and in some cases agree with the referee’s stance on no contact.  For sure some of our games are pretty much ruined by lumbering, unskilled loafs, who are just hacking at you all game.  What I didn’t understand was how tackles that would have been legal in outdoor soccer, were called for fouls, however illegal tackles in outdoor and just general ‘contact’ (ie pushing, and niggling) from behind was ok.

Like I said before, sure after the game we could read the rules, but we need to be told during the game the reason why every challenge is becoming a foul.

Last night was little better in terms of our gameplay; a 3-3 draw.  True we only drop one point, as scored draws are worth 2 points, but it just wasn’t a good game from out perspective.

Everyone was terribly flat.  The passing atrocious, and next to nil in communication.  Some would say we were unlucky, with Paul conceeding two simple goals, but I would counter with the two very easy chances they missed.  I feel for Paul, it’s not easy being the keeper, especially since he’s been overseas for a month.  It took me a while to get in form, so I wouldn’t expect the world from him.

Those guys just ran so damn hard all game, whilst we were left showing our age (bar Andy of course), wheeezing, puffing and just general redness.  I still believe despite our general unfitnesswe should have won, but one point dropped isn’t too bad.

Indoor Results

Last week we went down 6-5 in a narrow contest against . We were so short of players, we needed James’ brother Tom in goals, and myself to play. You can never bag a player who comes in to help out, but I think with anyone else in goals we could have won. Of course without Tom we would have surely lost.

Things got out of control once the referee awarded a goal scored from the kick-off, the was taken before he blew his whistle to start the game again. Despite our protests the goal stood. And all this served to do was to turn the referee against us.

We conceeded many ‘fouls’ from some great tackling, and t was too much for some of the guys to bear, Andy and Ryan andJames recieving yellow cards for dissent. The final blow was when the referee sent James with a second yellow for making a fine tackle.

Just the other day we came away with a good 6-3 against . Again short of players, with James suspended (and at the Opera!), I played the entire game, which I still rew to today. Andrew arrived early to play the game before us with some ates, in the hope that they would lend their keeper in return for the favour. Unfortunately the poor guy broke his wrist in their pre-game kick around.

It was a damn hard first half, but we held onto the lead going into the break 2-1. The second half Phil went in goals, and with Andrew out on the field, we tore them up. The new system of fouls, similar to basketballs 5 team fouls, caused some troubles for use late in the game, however we outplayed them to win farily comfortably.

Unfortuntely no videos as I played in these games, but I don’t think I’ll keep playing, I don’t want to push my luck, so maybe some next week.

First Indoor Game

We have a much more respectable name this season. Instead of the Super Samurai Scorers (!) we are known as Hotspur.

Oooh original! But much better than the laughable SSS.

Ok the first game.

Hotspur 9 - 3 FIFA All Stars

I didn’t think I would record each result, but I got some videos of this game so I wanted to this time.

Indoor is so much faster than outdoor, so I can’t really analyse much. We were down 2-1 at half-time, with one screaming goal from Andy and some terrific saves from their keeper. Pulling Dan out of goals was proven to be a good decision as the re-arranged team (with Phil in goals) dominated the seond half.

They just fell apart, and Ryan ripped through to score 4 goals. A lot of easy tap ins, but with great build-ups for each goal. James was unlucky to scrape a ripper past the keeper, who kept fighting while his team gave up.

James and Andy stayed on tonight to make the number for another team. Which worked out very benefically, seeing as they were impressed with the lads, decided to help us out next week when we a re short players. I won’t be making an appearance for sometime, and only against physically weaker teams. No way am I taking up the keeping gloves this season!

Videos later, once I work out how to use Bluetooth (to get them off my phone) and YouTube …

Here’s one in particular that was good …

Rest here …

Season Finale

WPH 4-6 STA

Pretty exciting match to end our season, even though we lost.

I arrived late, with the score 4-2 in our favour. I saw some good chances upon my arrival go begging, but was mostly uninterested in the game as I was talking to Paul.

Scott was denied a blantant penalty as he was steamrolled by one of the many trucks in St. Andrew’s team.

They brought the score back to 4-3 with a crazy shot from the sideline, which dipped well over Ryan’s head. To our disbelief the scores were level minutes later, when James S. scored goal of the season from the 18 yard line, for the wrong side. I think he was trying to clear it for a corner, but instead slooted this again high and dipping over Ryan into the top near post.

At 4-4 things only got worse as we conceded an terribly easy goal from meters out after some slack defending. The final insult was when James went in hard taking out one of their players, earning himself a second yellow card, and was duly shown the red.

Good onya James!

STA went on to score yet another unbelievable goal, from a free kick miles from goal. Ryan must have been looking in the sun or something, as yet another shot dipped over his head into the top near post.

Crazy game to watch, but considering that Kenthurst beat Ryde 3-0, we would have been in for a tough game. Stupid GHFA, we should have been playing Ryde, but they re-scheduled. Bastards!

Oh well, another seasons end, and for the first time in years I’ve ended it with msot of my body intact. I’m going to give indoor a miss, at least for the first half of the season, so my shoulder can fully recover, and so can my knee, and so can my ankles, etc, etc.

One game to rule them all

Thanks to more good bad weather in Sydney, it’s been raining soo much, last weekend’s game was cancelled, leaving just the one game to decide who takes the glorious Pennant.

With a bit of luck we managed to score a game against Ryde, who have had some smashings this season, not least of all our 8-0 win. They seem to be unable to reliably get a team together, even when they just call up random mates (quite illegal) they still struggle.

If they are down on players again this weekend, I was seriously considering playing. I hope that just for once, common sense will take control of me.
