It turns out I was attempting this all the wrong way, because of some careless research on my part.
For the last part of an hour two hours I’ve been struggling to get AIGLX and 3D acceleration working on the ATI video card in my work PC. I kept hitting a brick wall over this error
liam@liam-desktop:~$ fglrxinfo
Xlib: extension “XFree86-DRI” missing on display “:0.0″.
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.2 (1.5 Mesa 6.5.1)
It turns out that the fglrx drivers can’t be used with AIGLX. It was all there, but perhaps not as clearly as I needed.
I think my problem was following this wiki page. I kept ending up trying to install the fglrx drivers with no favourable result.
So for the moment AIGLX is out. Cheers ATI!

XGL should work, though, I think…
It absolutely does.
After giving up on AIGLX, I went ahead and tried using XGL…
Xubuntu Edgy, XGL and Beryl (ATI)
Works great!
after ATI driver installation, I have de same problem, DRI missing,
but you can add following lines on xorg.conf:
Section “ServerFlags”
Option “AIGLX” “off”
EndSection
Section “Extensions”
Option “Composite” “Disable”
EndSection
reboot your computer, comment out SeverFlags section and reboot again
work for me
I don’t know why, but work
success!
All true, except for VMware: I’m running beryl w/ Xgl on a 200M card, everything’s smooth and fine but VMware does not display graphics at all. The screen stay blank, resizes, the VM starts and I can see a mouse pointer (I thinks that is displayed in a different way then the desktop of the virutal XP). Neither player nor server nor workstation do function. I’ve found 1-2 other people having this problem, but it seems that nearly no one is running beryl + Xgl + VMware.
